Vernon and Kelowna Martial Artists Take a HUGE Medal Haul at Nationals

Students Sundance Martial Arts in Vernon and Northern Taekwon-Do Academy in Kelowna had a very successful weekend at the International Taekwon-Do Federation Canadian National Championships. The tournament, which took place on Saturday, November 12 in Calgary, Alberta boasted over 340 competitors representing many of the provinces across the country. The club sent 18 competitors to the event and brought back a staggering 38 medals, including 12 gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze. The club has 8 individual national champions in their respective categories. All 8 of the black belt competitors also earned seeding points to represent Canada at the 2013 I.T.F. Taekwon-Do World Championships in Benidorm, Spain. Selection for that championship will occur in November 2012 in Quebec City at next year’s Canadian National Championships.

The club also had 5 members representing the province on the British Columbia black belt sparring teams which puts 3 to 5 person teams against each other team sparring competition. Team BC took home 3 medals including 2 gold and 1 bronze. Brad Cotey and Peter McGowan both competed on the BC Men’s team and took the gold in an exciting match with Saskatchewan. The Junior Girls team, with locals Abbie Bennett and Taylor Halvorson as members, also took the gold in a hard fought match with the Saskatchewan team which ended in an overtime win for the BC girls. The boys also fought to an overtime round against Nova Scotia, but lost in the final round and took bronze. Local athlete Kai Halvorson is a member of the Jr. Boys team.

“All of our athletes, coaches and families put a huge amount of effort into their recent success and for that I couldn’t be more proud as an instructor and coach” said David White, Head Instructor of both locations. “Everyone went in with confidence and pride and knowledge that they were going to put forward their absolute best effort at the tournament.”

In the individual black belt categories, the eight Sundance athletes took home an impressive 13 medals, including 3 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze. Brad Cotey came up big with a gold in men’s 1st degree black belt patterns competition and silver in men’s heavyweight sparring. Taylor Halvorson took a gold in the junior girls heavyweight sparring category while also taking home the bronze in jr. girls 2nd degree patterns competition. Kai Halvorson took the gold in jr. boys lightweight sparring. Abbie Bennett has a great tournament placing silver in junior girls heavyweight sparring and bronze in junior girls patterns. Kelowna instructor Chris Rock brought back a silver medal in mens lightweight sparring while Peter McGowan took the silver in super senior black belt patterns. Rounding out the black belts were sisters Sarah and Fiona Dixon who both took bronze medals in their respective women’s patterns and sparring divisions.

In individual colour belt competition the club had 10 members competing at brought back 5 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals. Jill Halvorson took the gold in 6-8 year old green belt patterns and bronze in sparring. Maira Wilson took the gold in 6-8 year old green belt sparring and silver in patterns. Sarah Crerar won gold in 9-11 year old green belt patterns and bronze in sparring. Jake Andrykew took the gold in 9-11 year old yellow belt patterns and also took silver in sparring. Brett Bell won gold in 15-17 year old red belt lightweight sparring and took the silver in a very tough patterns division.

Also competing in the colour belt categories were brothers Jacob Bennett and Aiden Bennett. Jacob took the silver in his red belt sparring category and bronze in patterns while brother Aiden won silver in blue belt boys patterns and bronze in sparring. Ciara Wilson took home double silver in 12-14 girls blue belt patterns and sparring. Geoff Halvorson won double bronze in 35+ men’s red belt patterns and sparring. Natalie Bowie took the silver in women’s red belt sparring and bronze in patterns.

“I am very impressed with the caliber of the students from both Kelowna Northern Taekwon-Do Academy School and Sundance Taekwon-Do both of which are owed /operated by International Instructor , 4th degree black belt, David White.” Said B.C. men’s team coach Master Michael Barker, a 7th degree black belt with the International Taekwon-Do Federation. “I was most impressed with the conditioning of the competitors. At national level, being in top condition is huge. The work done by both students and competitors under the guidance of Mr. White, and his assistant instructors, showed. They were in a class of their own. The results at a National level are outstanding.”

“This was a great tournament with everyone leaving happy knowing that they performed to the best of their ability. We are looking forward to the next big event which will be the BC provincial championships in March.” Stated coach David White “It was a great experience for our competitors and allowed several athletes to earn points toward representing Canada. Our club and community are extremely proud of our athletes.”

Up next for the club is the ITF of BC Provincial Championships in early spring and the Western Canadian Championships in Vancouver in May. For more information on ITF Taekwon-Do programs in Vernon check out www.sundancemartialarts.com.
